‘Twilight’ and the Enduring Draw of Young Adult Fiction

The Atlantic has a great article that looks at a few of the most popular book series in YA Fiction, and then looks at what about them draws so many people in. They make the point that a lot of YA Fiction has changed, and become darker with the characters going through some truly horrific trials. Not only do these new books appeal to the YA audience, but they have a strong adult following as well. Read more below:

The young adult series that are so popular and profitable today are a little too dark for mere nostalgia. Authors and directors have struck chords with audiences by putting their teenage heroes through terrible trials. Harry Potter gives his life over to an epic struggle against international terrorism. Bella Swan may end up a sparkly, sexy vampire withpreternatural self-control, but she has to suffer a fetus eating its way out of her body first. The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen has to fight for her life in an arena, see her first love whipped, lose her sister, see her second love brainwashed, and be a pawn in a revolution. Ender is repeatedly and savagely attacked, tortured by his own brother, and manipulated by the military—before he kills off an entire alien species. The heroes of Legend are going to be an adolescent bounty hunter and vigilante.
That’s a lot to put characters—especially characters we love dearly, fiercely—through before they reach their maturity. It’s true we live in a time when teenaged years seem less than carefree. Whether it’s the pressure of grades and college admissions, the expanded reach of bullying in a social media age, the temptations and distractions of the Internet, or periodic adult panics about teenagers’ sexual behavior, adolescence sometimes seems as if it’s vanished, as if we’ve returned to a time when childhood ended shortly out of the cradle. Hijinks like the family dramas of the Baby-sitters Club members or even the high-consequence drug use, plane accidents, and relationship angst of Sweet Valley High don’t seem especially shocking in comparison. It takes national peril to put the difficulties of everyday life back in perspective.
At the same time, at a moment when our politics seem crippled, the prospect of an unexpected savior is appealing. Fictional teenage heroes are unencumbered by adult obligations and rigidities, they can afford to be ideologically poor. We are redeemed byHarry Potter’s martyrdom and salvation, something that would be horrifying and tragic in life. Katniss Everdeen can kill to enforce her convictions and go unpunished for it: the death she caused can have a clarifying effect on the adults around her. In Twilight, Bella Swan’s suffering purifies her and makes her influential in the community of vampires she joins even to the point of helping prevent a war. Ender Wiggin can exterminate a threat to humanity and repent for his actions, shifting attitudes towards aliens along the way.
Young adult fiction offers a promise to all of us that there is no suffering that’s not worth it, no agony that goes unrewarded down the line.

EXCLUSIVE: Twilightish Interview with Billy Burke (@billy_burke)

Billy Burke, also affectionally known as Papa Swan, talked to Twilightish today about Breaking Dawn ending, Music and what's next... oh yeah, don't think we forgot to ask about the famous Papa Swan 'Stache!

Twilightish: How does it feel to see the end of the Twilight Saga? Are you happy to move on?
Billy: It's weird you know? Cause it's kinda like being on a television show for the last three years. It was a steady gig for me you know? I can't say that I'm heart broken about it but it was a good gig for me. I'm a little on the fence about how I feel. I think that it has run its course, and we as artists and audiences have gotten everything we can possibly get out of it. Always happy to be moving on.  I have no idea what is next for me.
Twilightish: Do you wish for more movies?
Billy: No, no I don't wish for more Twilight movies. Anything beyond this would be pushing cartoon level.
Twilightish: When you look back on Twilight, would you do it all over again or pass?
Billy: Of Course! Absolutely! Actually, I enjoyed playing Charlie. I liked him!
Twilightish: What will you miss the most (or the least) about the Saga?
Billy: What I won't miss is the facial hair! It was a cute idea at first when I brought it up during the filming of the first movie. Then I had no idea we were going to make 5 movies. What will I miss? Charlie. I like playing him, I felt comfortable in his skin, even though he is nothing like me. I'm sure there are plenty of opportunities for parodies down the road.
Twilightish: Of all the character's you've played, where does Charlie rank?
Billy: Well in terms of career gigs, probably in the top 3, but I have a couple of my own personal favorites. I'm probably not going to tell you what they are cause I feel weird about that.  Although, Dill Scallion (1999) was more fun than people should be allowed to have making a movie. We shot it guerrilla style, sneaking into gigs and filming concert scenes.
Twilightish: Do you have a favorite moment from any of the 5 films? Either on camera or off camera?
Billy: I think my favorite moments are yet to come in the next two movies, I can't tell you what they are but they are yet to come!
Twilightish: Did you find it emotional to watch Bella get married?
Billy: You know what? It wasn't so much that it was emotional. Those days we were shooting the wedding, in all honesty, there was something about them that brought stuff up not only in me, but in other people on the set. Something that was visceral. We ended up saying "this is kinda weird isn't it?" I can't explain what it was, it wasn't like my daughter was getting married, but there was definitely something that was quite touching going on.
Twilightish: Were you ever Team Jacob? Or do you think Charlie would have chosen Edward between the two?
Billy: I have never played that game. I suppose had I ever read the books I may have had a stronger opinion, but I just don't care. Sorry!! It's not my thing. I think Taylor and Rob are great guys but I don't get into the fantasy world of picking a favorite boy character.
Twilightish: How much of yourself did you put into the character of Charlie?
Billy: Charlie has a sort of reserved nature, that I'm told I have as well. Beyond that he's a cop and I couldn't be further away from a cop, in attitude and daily actions. He also loves to watch sports and I don't really. It's a world of make believe, originally Charlie didn't read like he does now. Those ticklish funny moments came out by accident when I started working the part. So I guess Melissa (Rosenberg) took that and ran with it for the rest of the series. That was nice!
Twilightish: If you could (or did) take a prop or costume piece of Charlie's, what would it (or what was it) have been?
Billy: Not really into Charlie's wardrobe at all! If I never see another flannel shirt I'll be fine! But I may have saved the 'stache for the Smithsonian.
Twilightish: More recently we saw you in Red Riding Hood, how was it working with Catherine Hardwicke again?
Billy: Catherine and I have a great working relationship. We have an understanding and language to communicate with each other, she knows what she can get from me and I know how to get what I want out of her too. Super, great, interesting, artistic lady. I'll work with her again if she ever asks.
Twilightish: Do you have other projects on the horizon?
Billy: Nothing lined up, I'm just looking at stuff right now. I have to say, a lot of the stuff I've seen has not been great. I'm really going to focus on working on the new album, concentrate on doing that. And then the next movie gig that I do, I want it to be something that I love. It may take awhile.
Twilightish: When can we expect the new album?
Billy: I would imagine probably not until the end of the year or next year. It could come together a lot sooner but I'm super lazy. (Laughed)
Twilightish: What was the first record you ever bought?
Billy: Bought with my own money? It was The Cars, who strangely enough are on tour again. It was the The Cars - "The Cars" album.
Twilightish: Where do you pull some of your inspiration for your music from?
Billy: Inspiration? Observations! I do a lot of my writing by looking around, its very "Oh look at this, look at that, this situation I'm in, look at them over there, that's weird!". Music is where I can throw out my philosophies and people can choose to listen or not, I'm not in peoples faces about it. As far as musical influences go, Tom Waits, Troubadour Poets like Bob Dylan, David Bowie. I like a lot of the new stuff that is coming out, love Band of Horses, Mumford and Sons and stuff thats got stuff to say.
Twilightish: Last Question: Was there an official burial for the Swan 'Stache? Will it make an appearance at a Twilight Hall of Fame?
Billy: Every time we're about to start shooting I have to grow it back, takes about a month to grow in. Then immediately upon wrapping it comes off! I may or may not have been lying about where the 'stache is... it's a mystery.

Thanks to Billy Burke for taking the time to chat with us! Can't wait for that new album!

Esme Cullen One of Nine Movie Moms We Wish Were Ours

Most wouldn’t want a vampire as a mom, but they might make an exception if they met Esme Cullen. Sure, she gets a little crazy if she smells blood, but for the most part she’s warm, generous, loving, and welcoming, even if you’re a human girl dating her favorite son. Once you’re in her family, she’ll do anything for you, even go to war against vampires and werewolves or babysit your half-breed baby. Oh, and she enjoys baseball, art, and home decorating. She’s a pretty normal mom, really, except for the whole immortality and blood-drinking.

Was 'The Twilight Saga' the inspiration for new Vampire Class of Online Gaming?

Eudemons Vampire: Evil or Good?

Throughout the Internet and real life, from TV dramas to movies, vampire fever continues to grow as time passes by. The Twilight Saga brought this fever to an even higher peak, and vampire fans are everywhere. We can find vampires in every corner in our lives, even in MMO games! Now that Eudemons Online is going to release the new Vampire class, what kind of vampire will it be?

According to the old stories, vampires are always related to horror and bloodiness. In 30 Days of Night, Vampirism is portrayed as a virus that can be spread through scratches, bites and contact with vampire blood. The disease turns humans into the undead, and gives them a mouthful of shark-like fangs and black eyes. Human beings are becoming hopeless, because of the endless, bloody darkness. While we can find in Twilight that Edward Cullen is totally different from those horrific vampires, he is compared to the mythical Greek god, Adonis, and is described as being impossibly beautiful. Although Bella's blood smells overwhelmingly sweet to him, he fights the urge to feed from a growing attraction to her.

Will this coming vampire in Eudemons Online be a romantic heart breaker or a nefarious monster? How will this new class fight against other three classes? Is he going to have some marvelous skills to use against the many challenges they will surely face?

Base on the current release, we can tell that he is hot as the flames of the hell, yet kind of ice-cold and hard to come close to. He's got a strong and refined figure, as well as superhuman strength and speed. But the TQ team doesn't want to make it just a bloodthirsty creature with more brawn than brains. They will mix the strength, cruelty, and nobility together, into a creature unlike any we have seen.

'Twilight' Snubbed in 6 Categories by MTV Movie Awards

Most Twi-Hards today are celebrating the eight nominations received by "Eclipse" from the upcoming 2011 MTV Movie Awards, including Best MovieBest Male (Robert Pattinson AND Taylor Lautner) and Best Female(Kristen Stewart).

There were a whopping six of them in all:
Best Villain, Best Comedic Performance, Best Line From a Movie, Best Jaw-Dropping Moment, Best Scared-As-S**t Performance and Biggest Badass Star.

The most glaring omission is here is that neither Bryce Dallas Howard nor Xavier Samuel were nominated for
Best Villain.

It's not easy taking over a character from another actress -- fans are always going to compare you to the previous version -- but Howard
owned Victoria. And Samuel, he is nominated for Breakout Star, but why not here too?

Then there's
Best Line From a Movie. Perhaps because the first two "Twilight" films gave us so many great lines, the members of the MTV Movies Awards Academy have just come to expect it. What about Edward's line: "Bella, would you please stop trying to take your clothes off?" Not only is that hilarious, it more or less sums up the entire "Twilight Saga" in one sentence.

(**Side note-- I thought Edward saying: "Doesn't he own a shirt?" should have been included as well!) -S-

In the
Best Fight category, Robert Pattinson vs. Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel was nominated, but it's not enough. The Cullens and Wolf Pack versus the Newborn Army should not only have been included, but also gone on to win by unanimous decision. It includes mortal enemies teaming up for the good of Bella. Plus, CGI wolves, decapitation, vampire moves… what more could you want?
Biggest Badass Star should have at least two nominations from "Eclipse." First, obviously, is Robert Pattinson. He took on two vampires at once and managed to save Bella. And Jackson Rathbone should also be included. If he had been, he'd definitely be the dark horse nominee to win. He trained the Cullens and Wolf Pack to fight the Newborns and kicked that Army's a** without flinching.
For Best Scared-As-S**t Performance, you don't think Jodelle Ferland's Bree Tanner was scared-as-s**t watching the Cullens and Wolf Pack take on the Newborns? And as if Bella wasn't totally peeing her pants while Edward battled Victoria and Riley?

Finally, there's
Best Jaw-Dropping Moment. The Jacob and Bella kiss scene should be there. I knew it was coming and my jaw still went slack. I wanted to throw my Coke at the screen and yell "Skank!" but I couldn't. You know why? Because my jaw was dropped so far.

We'll still be watching the ceremony unfold on June 5. Will you?

Robert Pattinson Proves There Is Life After 'Twilight'

Is there life after you’ve been undead?
The opening box-office for Robert Pattinson’s new film “Water for Elephants,” a romantic drama that’s set amid a traveling circus during the 1930s, shows the young heartthrob may have reach beyond his blockbuster vampire franchise “Twilight.” Based on Sara Gruen’s bestselling novel of the same name, the film adaptation earned a better than expected $17.5 million, according to early estimates from distributor 20th Century Fox. Industry insiders believed the film would draw in the low-to-mid teens.
“It really over-performed,” said Fox distribution executive Bert Livingston, citing the film’s “old-time filmmaking” as one of the movie’s strongest assets, as well the popularity of the source material. “It’s a book that was on the bestseller list twice, so people had two chances to read it,” he said.

Twilight's Ashley Greene's lipstick Ms. Behavin by Benefit

As you may already know, the lipstick Ashley Greene wears in the film Twilight is VERY hard to come by.

The lipstick is by Benefit and is called Ms. Behavin. For some reason it is no longer listed on Benefit's web site.

Fortunately, the lipstick can still be purchased at
Amazon and for only $13.60.

Xavier Samuel talks 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' and 'Bree Tanner'

It's been a while since we've heard anything from Xavier Samuel ("Riley" in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), but this weekend, he spent some time in Sydney, Australia as a presenter for the Optus ONE80PROJECT Awards, and MTV Australia caught up with him to do an interview.

"[W]hen I flicked through the book I was like, where’s Riley? . . .  There was like one line, literally one sentence! I was fortunate in the sense that they decided to depart from Bella’s point of view for the first time - it’s still faithful to the book but it extrapolates other dimensions in it. So there is a kind of degree of expectation and pressure to remain true to a character that is so close to so many people’s hearts. So the pressure’s on, certainly for the characters that have more of a journey. But I think they’ve done an amazing job bringing the books to life."
